Driving Goals

Our Goal

At Youth Driving School, our mission is simple: to help every student become the safest driver possible. We get 8 hours behind the wheel with each student, but Ohio requires teens to complete 50 practice hours with a parent or guardian (10 of those at night). By working together, we can build confident, responsible drivers and improve safety for everyone.

Getting Started

Don’t Have Your Temps Yet?

To begin driving, you’ll need your Temporary Instruction Permit. Click the link below for the steps and to download the study booklet:

Driving Goals

Students with 0-10 Hours

Start in a large empty parking lot.
Adjust seat, mirrors, and steering wheel.
Learn basic controls: smooth starts, stops, and turns.
Practice using signals and understanding tire/steering positions.
Try driving in quiet neighborhoods with wide streets.
Always stop fully before crosswalks and stop bars.

Students with 11-24 Hours

Practice using wipers, A/C, and headlights without looking down.
Work on parking skills using multiple spaces.
Have the driver talk through what they see (you listen).
Teach scanning—eyes moving constantly, looking at least 200 feet ahead.
Start lane changes with blind spot checks: mirror → mirror → glance → signal → move.

Students with 25+ Hours

Let the student take the lead with navigation and route changes.
Practice parking in busy lots (like malls).
Try highway driving on low-traffic days (e.g., Sunday mornings).
Focus on holding a steady speed at or under the speed limit.
Play the “What if” game:
What if a car pulls out of a side street?
What if the car in front stops suddenly?
What if the light changes right now?

Clear driving goals turn nervous beginners into confident, safe drivers. At Youth Driving Schools we pair eight hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction with Ohio’s 50-hour supervised practice requirement, giving every student a step-by-step path from first lesson to road test.

Driving Goals at Every Stage of Practice

The milestones above break the journey into manageable driving goals — basic vehicle control in the first 0–10 hours, real-road judgment from 11–24 hours, and independent, exam-ready skills at 25+ hours. Working through them in order builds habits that last a lifetime.

F.A.Q

  • What driving goals should a new Ohio driver focus on first?

Start with basic vehicle control — steering, braking, mirror checks, and lane position — during your first 0 to 10 practice hours. These foundational goals make every later skill, like merging and highway driving, much easier to master.

  • How many behind-the-wheel hours does Youth Driving Schools provide?

We provide eight hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor, which works alongside Ohio’s required 50 hours of supervised practice with a parent or guardian.

  • How do the practice-hour milestones work?

We group driving goals into three stages: 0-10 hours for basic control, 11-24 hours for real-road judgment, and 25+ hours for independent, exam-ready driving. Progressing through them in order builds confidence safely.

  • How can parents help their teen reach these driving goals?

Parents help most by logging quality supervised practice, including the required night-driving hours, and coaching calmly. Our 50-hour driving log parent guide gives you a clear stage-by-stage plan to follow.
