Learn MoreBefore you can get your Ohio driver’s license or permit, you need to bring the right documents to the BMV. Knowing exactly which required documents to gather — and which forms you need from your driving school — saves you a wasted trip. This page is your complete checklist of the required documents for the Ohio licensing process.
Required Documents to Get Your Ohio Driver’s License or Permit
At the BMV, you must prove four things:
- Your full legal name and date of birth
- Your Social Security number
- Your legal presence in the United States
- Your Ohio residency — two documents from different sources
See the full list of accepted document types on our Driver’s License Acceptable Documents page, or check the official Ohio BMV acceptable documents list.
Driver Education Documents You Will Need
In addition to your identity documents, the Ohio driver education process requires specific forms that prove you completed your training and supervised practice:
- Online 24-Hour Education Certification
- 50-Hour Affidavit & Driving Log
- 24-Hour Affidavit & Driving Log (abbreviated)
What to Bring on Test Day
When you schedule or take your BMV exam, bring all of your required documents, your Temporary Instruction Permit (TIPIC), proof that you completed driver education, and a properly registered and insured vehicle. New residents and non-citizens should also review the specific documents for immigrants and new residents before their visit.
